Eaton Canyon to Echo Mountain PDF Print E-mail

Trail: Eaton Canyon

Length: 13 miles RT

Difficulty: Difficult and Strenuous with a 4,100' gain

Eaton

DESCRIPTION: Eaton Canyon is rugged and fairly inaccessible, with a fast running stream in wet years, and a lovely waterfall at the head of the canyon. The scenery is gorgeous.  You will see Oak, Bay and Big cone Spruce trees, as well as ample flowers in the spring. It is best to leave cars at both ends, as per instructions to trailhead below.

HOW TO GET TO THE TRAILHEAD: Park one car at the Sam Merrill Trail entrance at the top of Lake Avenue in Altadena. (See Lowe Mt Trailhead). Drive the other car to the beginning of the Mt. Wilson Toll Road, near the area where Pinecrest Drive makes it's east end loop. Walk up the toll road, passing Henniger Flats. One mile beyond the Flats, look for the Idlehour Trail, leading off to the left, and marked by a small wood sign. Follow this trail past old foundations of cabins, and be prepared to boulder hop as part of the trail is washed out. Look for the trail going off to the left and up a small canyon with a little water. It will make a sharp turn to the left, and will eventually meet up with the Mt. Lowe Fire Road. Turn left on the fire road to the cement foundation of Inspiraton Point. Follow the unmarked trail down to Echo Mountain, then to the Sam Merrill Trail to Lake Avenue, where you left the other car.
